Gupha Pokhari😊

Gupha Pokhari (गुफा पोखरी, “Cave Pond”) is a small natural highland pond at about 2,890 m (9,480 ft) in eastern Nepal, in the border area around Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha. It is a culturally significant stop on the Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale (TMJ) trail , known for Himalayan panoramas and extensive rhododendron forests. What makes it special The combination of water, high ridges, forest, and distant Himalayan peaks gives Gupha Pokhari its appeal. The Nepal Tourism Board describes it as a place for mountain, sunrise, and sunset views, while clear conditions can reveal major eastern Himalayan peaks; the pond also serves as a traditional resting point on the route from Basantapur toward Taplejung.Rhododendron country Gupha Pokhari lies within the broader Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale landscape , an area particularly celebrated for its remarkable diversity of rhododendrons. Spring transforms the surrounding forests with flowering rhododendrons, making March–May especially attractive for scenery; October–November generally offers another favorable period, with clearer post-monsoon mountain views. Cultural significance The pond is more than a scenic landmark: sources describe it as a sacred site associated with local religious traditions , including Hindu, Buddhist, and Kirat communities. The name is commonly translated as “Cave Pond” and is associated with traditions of priests or spiritual practitioners meditating in nearby caves. Gupha Pokhari can be approached from the Basantapur side of Tehrathum , traditionally as part of the ridge trek toward Taplejung; road access has also made the area considerably easier to reach than a trek-only destination. Conditions can be cold and foggy at this elevation, while simple lodges and teahouses support travelers along the wider TMJ route.
